Exemplars

If the Aim of the investigation is: To compare the energy content of different fuels

  • All energy comes from the sun, plants use the sun’s energy to create food (glucose) in a process called photosynthesis and animals gain this energy when they eat plants. Different fuels are created from various fossilised plants and animal remains and so different fuels contain different molecules. The amount of heat produced depends on the molecules that make up the fuel. Those that contain carbon and hydrogen react with oxygen very easily, creating carbon dioxide, water and other gases as waste products. The longer the molecule, the more energy is needed to break them apart and the hotter they burn.
