Range
Scientific concepts or ideas that relate to the results and conclusion of the investigation are explained in detail – i.e. the results are linked to named starting and finishing materials and to scientific processes or relationships relevant to the investigation.

If the Aim of the investigation is: To compare the energy content of different fuels
- All energy comes from the sun, plants use the sun’s energy to create food (glucose) in a process called photosynthesis and animals gain this energy when they eat plants. Different fuels are created from various fossilised plants and animal remains and so different fuels contain different molecules. The amount of heat produced depends on the molecules that make up the fuel. Those that contain carbon and hydrogen react with oxygen very easily, creating carbon dioxide, water and other gases as waste products. The longer the molecule, the more energy is needed to break them apart and the hotter they burn.
